PaMPITO & PNZ Branches Working Together
Over recent months PaMPITO and local PNZ Branches in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland have been working together to provide subsidies for the Introduction to Plastics short courses in these regions.
The Branches have joined PaMPITO in this initiative because they recognize the importance of industry training to enhance the knowledge and skills of employees.
The Introduction to Plastics courses have also generated great interest in plastics processing for people who haven't previously been exposed to "industry" training. In particular, newer employees and people not involved in production have appreciated the opportunity to learn about their industry. These courses have also proved to be a great way to recognise and reward employees.
PaMPITO is committed to making courses a success for the individuals and the organisation. PaMPITO Training Services Managers follow up after the courses to ensure that the trainees are able to complete assessment activities. They also provide coaching and support for individuals needing assistance to relate their learning to their work.
The collaboration between PaMPITO and the PNZ Branches has resulted in courses being more affordable and accessible, and has enabled more plastics companies and employees to benefit from Industry training. Over 80 participants have attended these courses in Auckland Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch.
PaMPITO would like to acknowledge and thank the PNZ Branches in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland for their commitment to training and contribution in this collaboration.

Subsidies
At PaMPITO we prefer to give you our time and expertise to support you to develop an ongoing learning culture within your organisation rather than fund one-off training events. We believe our ongoing support and assistance create better returns from your training investments. Nonetheless, we recognise that some financial assistance also helps so we have made the following subsidies available for programmes that we know make a real difference:
- $1,000 subsidy per person for new Modern Apprentices signed up this year.
- $1,000 subsidy per person for new trainees embarking on a First Line Management qualification.
- Subsidies against costs for Competitive Manufacturing qualifications.
- Subsidies against selected PaMPITO course costs. (So far this year we have provided subsidies for more than 40 participants against course costs).

Bring a Friend to Training
In response to the current economic climate we encourage you to think towards the future and the skills you will need when the recession is over. We've been offering a "bring a friend" deal on some of our courses. Companies send one of their people to a course and, another person who may be interested in starting training can attend the course for free.
This is a 2-for-1 deal that we have trialled with some of our Plastics Materials (PPT01) courses. We still need our minimum numbers to make the courses viable (8 fully paid or 16 half price), however, the responses to date have been incredible with one course reaching 20 participants within 2 weeks of advertising the special.
We're continuing this 2-for-1 deal on selected courses for the rest of this year. The primary objective is to encourage more people into training with a view to ensuring we have suitably skilled people ready for when the economy picks up.
Please talk to your Training Services Manager at PaMPITO for more information or email us: courses@pampito.org.nz

GEN03 Course - Essential Communication Skills
a personal experience by Matiu Payne
As someone involved in the arranging of courses for our trainees, I don't always get the chance to participate in them. I took the opportunity this year to go on the Essential Communications (GEN03) course at MIT. There were six level 1 and level 2 unit standards in the course that related to team work, cross cultural communication and listening skills.
I came away from that course with a greater appreciation of what it is to communicate well - much to my surprise. I have done tertiary study at other polytechnics and Universities and not once throughout all my years of study has someone actually taught me to listen. We discovered on the course that 100% of the country knows how to hear, but only 20% knows how to listen, and after learning the techniques offered in this course, I concur!
Take the opportunity to enrol in this course when it comes around again or to attend the one in Christchurch which is coming up on 10 June as night classes. Managers, trainees, mentors, Workplace Assessors - we can all benefit from what this and other courses have to offer - even if like me, you thought you knew it all.

Graduation Ceremonies For 2009
PaMPITO will be organising its own graduation ceremonies for our graduates this year. We are actively monitoring our qualification completions to determine where the greatest numbers of graduands will be situated. In this way we can hold our graduation events at places that will better suit trainees.
Every completion, up to and including October 2009, will be eligible to participate in our graduation events in November. We will hold on to all the Certificates until then. Don't miss out on graduation; it's a time to celebrate your achievements.
